Rob has set a date for his 1st Oz tour!

Robert Pattinson, best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, is making his first visit to Australia.

The heartthrob will hit our shores on May 6 for the world premiere of his new movie, Water For Elephants, co-starring Reese Witherspoon.

His visit has the potential to cause mayhem in Sydney. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Pattinson spoke about the difficulty of travelling because of the constant attention it generates from his many fans. The actor, who is often described as shy, says he no longer likes to catch aeroplanes for fear of being recognised. Women and girls want to touch him and men want to beat him up, he says.

Pattinson was plagued by fans on the set of Water For Elephants which shocked Witherspoon.

"They were waiting at five o’clock in the morning to see him. Young girls. Where are their mothers?” she said to Vanity Fair.

The movie's director, Francis Lawrence, described the difficulty of catching up with the megastar: "We were having dinner at the hotel in a private room and they were clamouring up to the windows so the waiters shut the blinds. So they just start screaming and banging on the windows, clawing at the windows. And then you hear this desperate voice: ‘Rob! I just want to touch your hair!’"

"Rob could get ripped to shreds," he continued. "They will rip the clothes off his body and pull his hair out.”

The last time Sydney girls went wild for a teen heartthrob was Justin Bieber's visit in April last year. Many of the girls had camped out overnight and thousands turned up to get a glimpse of the young star who was due to perform in Sydney's Circular Quay. The performance had to be cancelled after the crowd got out of control with several girls treated by paramedics.

Pattinson's Twilight co-stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner visited Sydney last year in a promotional tour that was largely drama free, however around 3000 girls waited for more than six hours in the wind and rain outside Luna Park to see their idols.

The Water For Elephants premiere will take place at Sydney's State Theatre in the heart of the CBD. At the moment there are no details on the security measures surrounding the event.

Witherspoon won't be attending but fellow actor and Oscar winner Christopher Waltz will be at the star-studded event alongside Pattinson and Lawrence.

Water For Elephants will be released in cinemas on May 12. Based on the best-selling novel, Pattinson plays a penniless veterinary student who joins a travelling circus. He falls in love with the star performer (Witherspoon) but must face the wrath of her husband, the dangerous circus-owner (Waltz). Click here to watch the trailer.
